A mystery in the Dragon Age series involves a unique crossbow named Bianca. Her origins and especially the reason for her name have never been resolved. We’ll clarify for you the mystery that the video game series didn’t reveal.
What kind of crossbow is that? Bianca is the crossbow of Varric, a companion who first appears in Dragon Age 2. Varric is skilled with his crossbow and usually only needs a single shot to take out his opponent.
He often shouts things like: “Bianca, darling, introduce yourself!” Varric talks to his crossbow as if it were alive and the community has also perceived the weapon as an independent character.
Although Bianca is so present in Dragon Age, and especially in the life of Varric, the reason for her name has never really been explained. At least not in the video games.
It was first introduced in Dragon Age 2, but instead of revealing its backstory in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the game initially planned a different fate for the weapon: This was heavily discussed by the community at the time in the gameplay trailer.

Bianca’s backstory and the origin of her name
Where does the crossbow come from? In the DLC Dragon 2: Legacy, a background story for the crossbow was provided for the first time. It was created by Gerav, with whom Varric was in contact at the time. Gerav had to be killed due to the darkspawn infection. Since then, Varric has owned the crossbow.
Why is Bianca called that? It is only in the comics Dragon Age: Until We Sleep and Dragon Age: Inquisition that it is explained where the name of the crossbow comes from.
The actual Bianca was a long-time love of Varric’s. She was a dwarf, a blacksmith, but couldn’t be with Varric because of the dwarven mafia.
Although Gerav forged the crossbow, he was unable to turn it into a functional weapon. Varric brought the weapon to Bianca, who managed to make a dangerous weapon out of the crossbow in no time.
But Varric and Bianca had to keep the crossbow secret so that they would not be forced to make more such dangerous weapons.
Varric is probably so proud of his loved one’s achievement that he named the weapon after her.
