From Oscar winner to Golden Raspberry in one year – not every star can do that. After his win for The Discovery of Infinity as Best Actor in 2015, he was nominated for another Oscar and awarded the Negative Prize the following year.
For Jupiter Ascending, Eddie Redmayne has the Received Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor. A decision that the actor can understand.
Redmayne plays the villain in the sci-fi film
Jupiter Ascending was released in 2015 and was written and directed by the Wachowski sisters (The Matrix). Redmayne plays a galactic alien noble who fights with his siblings for control of Earth.
However, he gets in the way of immigrant Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who has to work as a cleaner in the USA and has a special genetic code. She is the reincarnation of the deceased queen of the universe – and is therefore entitled to her inheritance. Redmayne’s villain then wants her dead.
Eddie Redmayne went too far in his performance in Jupiter Ascending
In a 2018 video from GQ, Eddie Redmayne recapitulated his most iconic roles. His portrayal of Balem Abrasax in Jupiter Ascending also came up. Redmayne has one for the role special trick due to the character’s backstory thought up:
My character had his larynx ripped out by this wolf man, so I made the somewhat bold decision – which I thought was the right one.
Eddie Redmayne spoke very quietly and sounded hoarse in the film. The decision was waved through by directors Lilly and Lana Wachowski. Redmayne liked the freedom the directors gave him. In the end, however, this freedom ensured that Redmayne was awarded the Golden Raspberry. However, he takes responsibility alone:
I won an award for the worst performance of the year. So, yeah, it was a pretty poor performance on my part.Redmayne’s career bounced back from the setback
That same year, he also received a Best Actor nomination for The Danish Girl. So we can do the performance in Jupiter Ascending rather see it as a slip-upbecause as a real evaluation of his acting qualities.
If you want to see Redmayne from his reserved side – compared to the sci-fi film – you can currently do so in the thriller series The Day of the Jackal do that streams on Sky and WOW. In it he plays a cool contract killer who is supposed to kill a billionaire. This is well received by the Moviepilot community: the new adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s novel has an average rating of 7.4 points.
