In an interview with NRK, Ole Gunnar Solskjär, 51, recalled his time as the head coach of Premier League club Manchester United.
Norwegian soccer coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received departure passes from the Manchester United head coach’s plot in November 2021. He has been without a team since then.
Solskjär managed to coach Manchester United for three years. In an interview with Norwegian media NRK, the coach opened up about his time at the helm of United. One thing left Solskjäri nagging from his years at United, namely the megastar Cristiano Ronaldo acquisition.
– It was probably the wrong choice. Then it felt like the decision was right, Solskjär said.
Ronaldo rose to the greater consciousness of the football world at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009. Ronaldo was signed to Manchester again in August 2021.
The Portuguese player’s last visit to United ended in a controversial atmosphere. Ronaldo was of the opinion that the club had not progressed since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.
In December 2023, Ronaldo switched to the jersey of his current team, al-Nassr, who plays in the Saudi Arabian league.
Apart from his home country, Solskjär himself only played for Manchester United in the years 1996–2007. The goalscorer, who excelled especially as a substitute, scored 91 goals in 235 matches in the Premier League. He celebrated the Premier League championship no less than six times and, among other things, the Champions League victory in the legendary triple season 1998–99.
In addition to ManU, the Norwegian has been the head coach of his home country Molde on two separate occasions and the Welsh club Cardiff.
Solskjärin national team coach?
Ole Gunnar Solskjär has not coached for three years. He is still a current name in the coaching market.
According to media reports, the Norwegian coach has been attracted to the Saudi Arabian league, MLS and also to coach the Danish national team.
Solskjär has refused the job, but admits that he would be interested in coaching the national team.
– I think the national team could suit me, the coach said.
Several experts believe Solskjäri will be the next head coach of the Norwegian national football team.
– I am a proud Norwegian. If it comes up that Ståle Solbakken doesn’t want to continue as the coach of the national team, I’m happy to participate in the discussions, Solskjär stated.
