New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has formally apologized to the hundreds of thousands of children and adults who were abused by the state and the church.

– It was terrible, Luxon said in the country’s parliament on Tuesday.

The apology comes after an investigation in July showed that an estimated 200,000 people – including many belonging to the indigenous population – were subjected to “unimaginable” abuse in several different types of care activities.
