The Cloudwalkers are considered the biggest waste in Destiny 2, but originally they could have been much cooler

Bungie is rather sparing with the introduction of new races in Destiny 1 & 2. With Lightfall it was the cloud runners, which had never existed before, but they were considered the biggest waste. This people looked completely different before the release, but Bungie changed their mind.

Who are the cloud runners? The Cloud Runners were first introduced in the Destiny 2: Lightfall expansion. These are huge, muscular people who have been transformed into cyborgs using technology. They are the protectors of Neomuna, a city on Neptune.

They guard the residents of the city and the traveler’s veil against enemies and the darkness. The only members of their kind currently are Nimbus and Rohan, who players will get to know during Lightfall’s story.

Although they have a massive and modern look, many fans couldn’t get used to the cloud runners. Nimbus also annoyed a lot of people with his character. He never gave off the feeling that he knew what was at stake. Instead he wanted to hand out fistbumbs.

However, fans have now come across old concepts of the cloud runners and are wondering whether this design would have brought the people the popularity they deserved.

What did the cloud walkers look like before? Reddit user SwirlyManager-11 has published some Cloud Runner concepts and shows which ideas Bungie rejected. These are dark creatures that have a humanoid body structure, but appear anything but human, see for yourself:

This is what the cloud runners looked like before the release (via reddit.com)

The concepts show three colored cloud walkers as they pose. The first example even has metal wings, a cartridge belt on the chest and crystals located around the shoulders and under the belt. The faces look expressionless and only serious, glowing eyes can be seen.

The second specimen looks like a monk with green skin. The clothing is lighter and even has accents of plants that may have come from Neomuna. In addition, the monk’s robe is disintegrated near the feet.

The last example is a massive warrior in thick, black armor. The armor is half noble, covered with a red cloth. In addition, the cloud runner holds a staff with several points. The knight also has a style with an unusual helmet, which makes him appear even more impenetrable.

If you compare these concepts to the final Cloud Runners, you’ll quickly notice that Bungie has done a lot to make them barely resemble each other.

What do fans say about the original design? On Reddit talking about the general idea behind the cloud walkers. They think it’s a shame that Bungie created such a cool faction from the ground up only to put it in a DLC and then forget about it. The following can be heard:

  • “Meeting a group of secret anti-Watchers is such a good idea and I still can’t believe it [Bungie] screwed up so bad.” – owen3820
  • “I have no idea why they did the whole rule of two thing. I would have liked to have met other Cloudwalkers, and perhaps Nimbus’s younger, cockier attitude would have worked as second in command.” – ReadStraight8255
  • “I don’t think it was the aesthetics that put people off (I actually quite like it myself), but just the crappy lyrics. “Cow dung” is not an appropriate response to someone who sees their father calcifying right before their eyes.” – 420Frederik
  • “I’m not sure what a lot of people are talking about here because the current cloud runner aesthetic is definitely a turn off for me lol. Nimbus’ reflective bikini top is ugly, they have scary facial features, and their necks are really gross to look at (not in a good way). Not to mention the weird bulging pants they’re wearing? What is that supposed to be?” – xWinterPR
