Several monks have been beaten in an attack on a monastery in the Spanish region of Valencia. On Saturday, a man entered the Santo Espíritu del Monte monastery and attacked four of the seven monks who live in the monastery, Spanish media reports.
The man beat the monks with sticks and is reported to have shouted “I am Jesus Christ”. Then he fled from there.
According to a statement from the archbishop, it was “a disturbed person” who entered the monastery and attacked the brothers when they were in their rooms, with the express intention of killing, reports Spanish ABC.
The injured are four men: 57, 66, 76 and 95 years old. One of the monks is seriously injured and was taken to hospital with head injuries.
On Sunday, Spanish police announced that a 45-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of the attack.
