World elite gathered
That year, some of the world’s top athletes gathered in Gothenburg for a historic and unforgettable event that has never been repeated since. Eight mega stars were handpicked and the competition was named “World Sports Masters”.

The sport’s most well-known names were lined up and the goal was to appoint the very best, after several different competition branches. The most all-around skilled athlete would be crowned in front of a packed Scandinavium and millions of television viewers from all over the world.
Gretzky outclasses
During the star-studded competition, Gretzky, Borg, Pelé and the boxer met Sugar Ray Leonard in the 60 meter race, see for yourself below. Where the hockey icon completely outclasses everyone and when Gretzky sees the video again, over 40 years later, he bursts out laughing.
– You run over them in 60 metres!, says a hockey expert on the television channel TNT to Wayne.
– I had intended to turn around and run to the finish line backwards, but I was afraid that I would fall then. Haha, oh my God!, Gretzky replies and can’t stop laughing.

However, it should be added that Wayne Gretzky was only 21 years old in 1982, while both Björn Borg and Sugar Ray Leonard were 26 years old and Pelé who had turned 42 years old. But it’s still incredibly impressive, see the video below.
In the end, it was actually the skiing icon Ingemar Stenmark who took home the overall victory in the World Sports Master 1982 in Gothenburg. He proved to be the strongest after various branches were completed and the most all-round of the world stars.
