Then you lose money when you work overtime

In Sweden, we have a law which means that you can work a maximum of 200 hours of overtime per year. But for special reasons, the employer can order an additional 150 hours of overtime per year.

– The amount of overtime that can be posted can vary somewhat depending on whether you work at a workplace that is covered by a collective agreement or not, and therefore you need to check what applies to you in particular, says Rebeccatrade union advisor at the Union, to News24.

What does overtime pay mean?

If you work beyond your regular working hours, you can receive compensation in the form of overtime compensation.

– It can be given in the form of money or time off, so-called overtime compensation, depending on what is agreed with your employer and what is written in the collective agreement. In order to receive overtime compensation, the overtime work must be ordered in advance or approved afterwards by the employer. The compensation is usually higher for overtime than for regular working hours, says Rebecka and continues:

– Receiving overtime compensation is not a matter of course because there is no law that regulates salary or overtime compensation in Sweden.

Then you can get extra vacation days instead of salary

Upon agreement, an individual regulation can be made in the employment contract to receive more vacation days instead of overtime compensation.

– In collective agreements, overtime compensation is usually a main rule, but some civil servants can thus agree with the employer that instead of receiving overtime compensation, they receive compensation in the form of more vacation days and higher wages. This has increasingly become something that even employers without a collective agreement offer, she says.

But what is really better, money in the wallet or paid leave?

Yes, it depends a bit on your preferences and financial situation.

– Receiving overtime compensation means that you have more actual money to spend with the months you receive it. However, many people experience a higher value from getting more paid vacation days. It is important that you do not agree on overtime compensation in exchange for too little compensation. In some cases, not only a few extra vacation days are enough as compensation, but perhaps additional compensation is required in the form of a higher salary.
