After only three years: Liljevalch’s concrete facade is cracking

It is not the first time the new extension has had construction problems. In connection with the opening of the art gallery in 2021, it was discovered that water was leaking into the exhibition halls.

Now the facade must be renovated because the concrete has cracked in several places. But that’s normal, according to the City of Stockholm’s property director Anders Kindberg.

– It is not at all unusual for concrete to dry over a long period of time and for cracks to appear, he says.

“Very special building”

The local newspaper Mitt i has spoken to Johan Silfwerbrand, professor of concrete construction at KTH, who says that cracks in facades are unusual, but Anders Kindberg disagrees.

– I read it and he refers to facade elements, but this is a very special building and is cast in place and then cracks can appear after a while and we are sealing them now.

Continues throughout the year

If there are cracks so easily, which need to be sealed every three years, should you really build in concrete?

– This is something that happens during a drying process with concrete, so hopefully drying cracks will not appear in this facade again. In new concrete constructions it can occur, but it is not recurring, says Anders Kindberg.

The renovation continues for at least the rest of the year, but does not affect visitors.
