The police searched for 84,300 Swedes – have you answered?

This summer, the police in the south sent out letters with a questionnaire to 84,300 people living in Blekinge, Kalmar, Kronobergs and Skåne counties. It was people between the ages of 16 and 85 who were expected to receive mail from the police regarding a security survey.

“We want to know, for example, how citizens experience any problems where they live, whether they have been exposed to crime or not in the past year, whether they are worried about being exposed to crime and also whether they feel safe in their residential area,” wrote Mats Trulssoncrime prevention coordinator and responsible for the implementation of the security investigations, in one press release.

New ban from 1 November – applies in Malmö

The new ban is a so-called bylaw that was decided by the city of Malmö and which applies in public places in the Malmö urban area.

The ban applies to nitrous oxide.

– People who inhale nitrous oxide quickly become very affected. It is often noisy and a lot of shouting in these situations and it creates discomfort among people around, says Johannes Dontsiosmunicipal police in Malmö, in a press release.

– With this ban, we get a new tool to approach the problem.

The city of Malmö is not alone in this decision. In November 2023, it was decided in Linköping to introduce nitrous oxide-free zones.

Despite several local bans, it is still legal to buy and use nitrous oxide.

“The community takes this seriously”

According to Dontsios, it is also about working on crime prevention. In the press release “Linux gas is prohibited in public places in Malmö” it is stated that only nitrous oxide that is used for intoxicating purposes is prohibited.

– With a concrete ban, it will be a clearer signal that society takes this seriously, he says the press release.
