French clubs are struggling this season in the Europa League with very contrasting results.
A miracle for a small point. Against the Dutch from Twente, Nice first sank, being led 2-0 with an exclusion as a bonus. But after the hour mark and this red card, the Aiglons revolted to return to the game and finally snatch a 2-2 draw. An encouraging result in the state of mind, but not in accounting terms since Nice is 31st out of the 36 clubs involved.
For Lyon, the move could have been perfect. Facing the Germans from Hoffenheim, Alexandre Lacazette thought for a moment that he could give his team victory at the end of added time, but the Germans managed to equalize just after in a crazy end to the match. In the standings, this draw does not do the business of OL who are outside the top 8, in 9th place.
New rules
The 2024-2025 Europa League, which has been scheduled from Wednesday September 25, is a completely revamped edition of the competition, with UEFA having decided to increase the number of teams from 32 to 36. Gone is the traditional phase of groups, place in a single league where each team will face 8 different opponents (4 at home, 4 away), according to a draw, like the changes made in the Champions League. At the end of this first phase, until January 30, 2025, the first eight in this unique league will be directly qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League. The teams ranked from 9th to 24th place will compete in play-offs to reach the eighth place. Beyond this 24th place, pure and simple elimination awaits the lowest placed teams.
The play-offs for the final phase of the Europa League have been scheduled for January 31, February 16 and 20, 2025. The round of 16 on March 6 and 13, then the quarter-finals on April 10 and 17, the semi-finals on May 1 and 8 and the final on May 21, 2025, in Bilbao. Another notable difference with previous editions: no team from the Champions League will enter this Europa League. Good news for the participating clubs who have had the trophy stolen five times by clubs from the C1 in recent years.
With 36 teams and 144 matches to play, this new format aims to offer a longer and more intense “league phase”. The French teams will have a lot to do in this major tough championship, but can have great ambitions.
