This week, a new French series is released on Netflix which features an extremely popular sport, but rarely told by French series.
Programs that go behind the scenes of a sport often arouse curiosity. Netflix does not hesitate to put series like this online, such as The lady’s game (yes, chess is a sport), The English Game, Cobra Kaior even documentaries Sprint, Five major Or The Last Dance.
This week, it’s a tricolor fiction about a sport never before staged on French television, but nevertheless extremely popular, which has the honors of the streaming platform. After the two seasons of Valida successful series which took place in the world of rap, Franck Gastambide (Medellin, Taxi 5) is at the helm of a new fiction in several episodes.
The cage describes, as its name suggests, behind the scenes of MMA, a combat sport based on mixed martial arts. The Netflix series follows a young fighter who dreams of turning pro but has difficulty getting noticed. An unexpected fight puts him in the spotlight, until he finds himself facing a formidable opponent. Franck Gastambide is passionate about this combat sport, so it is not surprising that he grabs the camera to film it behind the scenes.
If the protagonist of the series is played by the actor Melvin Boomer (Wise Man, The World of Tomorrow), real MMA fighters are also in the cast: the legend Georges St Pierre (considered one of the greatest fighters in history with 26 victories out of 28 fights), Ciryl Gane (12 victories out of 14 fights), Salahdine Parnasse (sometimes nicknamed “the prodigy” or “the Mbappé” of the MMa), Morgan Charrière, or even Anissa Meksen (several times world champion) and Abdoul Abdouraguimov to name but a few.
The five episodes of the first season of The Cage are posted online exclusively on Netflix, you must therefore have a subscription to the streaming platform to be able to view them. The series is scheduled to release on November 8, 2024.
