Savile, 41, has been in custody awaiting a bail hearing since Oct. 15 after Stratford police and paramedics were called to his apartment at 475 Ontario St. Ballantyne-Holmes, 35, was found unresponsive after allegedly being shot and was rushed to Stratford General Hospital, where she later died.
Savile was charged with second-degree murder, possessing a gun without a license, carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offense, and manufacturing a firearm without authorization.
Eventually, a judge or justice of the peace will decide, based on the evidence and submissions of the parties, whether to detain or release Savile, with or without conditions, according to the Canadian Department of Justice website.

“The court considers any evidence brought forward by the prosecution in order to ensure public safety, as well as the safety of victims or witnesses. This can include information on the seriousness of the charge, whether it involved violence, weapons or firearms, and details about the past criminal behavior of the accused.”
Wednesday’s adjournment was the fourth since Savile was arrested Oct. 15 after the city’s second fatal shooting of 2024. Dozens of friends, family and supporters recently participated in a memorial candlelight walk for Ballantyne-Holmes.
Stratford police are still investigating. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Stratford Police Service at 519-271-4141, ext. 8116, or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or p3tips.com.
