(Finance) – Last October 25th the Assembly of Oxfam Italia members – humanitarian organization which is part of the international confederation Oxfam – has re-elected Emilia Romano as President for a second term, having been involved in the non-profit sector for over 35 years in organizations such as Greenpeace, Save the Children and UNHCR; founder and director of the Italian branch of HelpAge, an association committed to protecting the rights of the elderly in Italy and around the world.
“As illustrated in our latest annual report, inequalities continue to increase worryingly: a few super-rich multiply their fortunes at exorbitant rates, while billions of people suffer from wars and climate chaos. Since 2020, the 5 richest men in the world have more than doubled, in real terms, their fortunes, while the wealth of almost 5 billion poorest people has shown no sign of growth and in Italy, in 2022, over 2 millions of families were in absolute poverty. Our commitment can therefore only be aimed at the weakest groups and those at risk of exclusion, both in Italy and in the countries of the Global South. We will give priority to building solid alliances with the different realities of civil society, since only through common action can we imagine a more equal future and our feminist approach will guide every step, because there can be no economic, social and environmental justice without justice of gender. We will continue to fight inequalities and contribute to defeating extreme poverty, saving the lives and dignity of those who, in difficult contexts such as Gazais losing hope of a peaceful future”Romano said.
At the same meeting the Board of Directors was also renewed.
