The election promises have been many with both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. But who do the parties’ election manifestos really think are the most important issues? And what could the United States look like if the content became a reality?
We have had AI analyze the election manifesto and create images based on the results.
– The Democrats talk more about a brighter future, while the Republicans’ images contain armored vehicles as well as big, thick clouds of worry in the sky, says USA expert Andreas Utterström.
The Democrats: Diversity and Innovation
Four images have been produced, using the AI tool Midjourney and ChatGTP-4 – where the Democrats’ focus, according to the election manifesto, is small business, diverse and inclusive societies.
– I would like to describe the images that symbolize the Democrats’ manifesto, not as rainbows and unicorns, but still a bright future with innovation, says Andreas Utterström.
The image that best captured the Democrats’ election manifesto is the one with flying disco balls, says Utterström.
– Kamala Harris has talked a lot about small businesses, innovative power and that the United States plays a role in the world where “we are the best, we must go first”. And I think the picture captures that very well, he says.
The Republicans: Family and the Military
For the Republicans, it is rather the image showing armored vehicles, dusk and an American flag that best describes the party’s visions, according to Utterström.
– It captures the Republican manifesto and what Donald Trump himself says time and time again. Trump talks about an apocalypse and the older he gets the more dystopian he gets. I think the picture pretty much captures the way he talks, he says.
In the Republican manifesto, there is a focus on security, a strong military, family and secure borders. When ChatGTP-4 produced the instruction, a so-called prompt to create the Democrats’ pictures, a “positive and hopeful tone” was included.
Something that was missing in the Republican election manifesto – where the underlying tone of the caption was rather “powerful” and “national pride”.
– It is interesting. There are gloomier tones in the Republicans’ election manifesto than the Democrats’ and it is completely in line with the picture they paint of the future, says Utterström.
The president can influence less
The election manifesto gives the voters a picture of what the parties stand for over a longer period of time and shows what the United States could be like if Donald Trump or Kamala Harris were allowed to decide completely freely – which, according to Utterström, is impossible.
The reality is more complex than that.
– The president must have the congress with him, who sits on the wallet, and then there are a lot of external circumstances such as the security policy situation in the world and the world economy. It does not control the president, even if it can seem that way sometimes, says Utterström.
How much of the AI images of the election manifesto could become reality is therefore impossible to say, says Utterström.
– Perhaps the most accurate picture is a person who has two faces, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, who is in a tug of war with Congress, because that’s pretty much what it will look like. It’s one of the few things you can be sure of right now.
This is how the AI analysis was done
We prayed ChatGPT-4 to write a prompt to the image editing tool Midjourney which generated a photo-realistic image that reflects what society will be like if the content of each party’s election manifesto becomes reality.
The result of ChatGPT-4 prompts were reviewed manually. Based on the prompt, we asked ChatGPT-4 to identify the most important points in each election manifesto. We also asked it to explain why the Democrats’ election manifesto had a more hopeful prompt than the Republicans’.
The respective prompt was used in Midjourney which created four images for each.
We asked USA expert Andreas Utterström to analyze and interpret the results.
The article uses the original images from Midjourney.
