A female student in Iran was arrested on Saturday after she protested against the country’s laws on how women can dress in public, by stripping down to her underwear outside her university, several media reports.
The woman, who has not been identified, had been harassed inside Tehran’s prestigious Islamic Azad University by members of the paramilitary Basij force who reportedly tore off her headscarf and clothes.
She then took off her clothes in protest and sat outside the university wearing only her underwear before walking out into the street to the surprise of passers-by, videos posted on social media show.
Another video shows her being taken away by plainclothes men. The newsletter Amir Kabir writes that she was beaten during the arrest.
According to the mandatory dress code in Iran, women must wear headscarves and loose clothing in public.
