The police chief: “A threat to democracy” – off-duty police were beaten in Sollefteå

The 25-year-old suspect is under arrest on suspicion of violence against an official. The beaten policeman has been allowed to leave the hospital, but the police management takes the incident very seriously.

– We are supposed to stand up for democracy and if you give up on us, you really give up on democracy, says Hans Björner, head of the southern Ångermanland police area.

On Sunday, police said it was likely a revenge attack because the beaten police officer had recently made an intervention against the suspect.

Decision on detention on Tuesday

The investigation is led by prosecutor Cecilia Smith and after questioning she will make a decision on Tuesday whether the suspect should be remanded in custody or not. Until then, both police and prosecutors are extremely sparing with details about the investigation.

In the video, you hear Hans Björner describe what an incident like this means and what a police officer working in a small town needs to think about.
