While the complaints of “I’m cold” are starting to increase these days when the air temperatures start to drop, some citizens are trying to take precautions by wearing thermal, woolen or thick clothing. Experts point out that this complaint may be a sign of diseases due to the deficiency of some vitamins in the body.

Chief Physician Check Up Specialist Dr. underlines that feeling cold is a very normal reaction in the body. Elif Ünüvar: “Especially with the winter months, patients spend less time outside and want to escape home more due to the cold weather, or we want to buy something thick. We normally consider feeling cold as a reaction of our body at this moment. But of course, this should not be interpreted as cold.

In people who complain of constant coldness, we have the underlying cause. People who say ‘I am very cold’ may develop flu infections, inflammations in the body, such as cold, flu and bronchitis, especially with the onset of winter months. When we give them symptomatic treatment, the effect of cold and fever will disappear. However, despite these complaints, if they still feel cold, even in normal situations, such as when the cold has no effect, we would definitely like to conduct further examinations and research and re-evaluate the underlying causes.”

THERE MAY BE HYPOGLYCEMIA OR VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES BEHIND THE COLD

Pointing out that there are many reasons for coldness and that many vitamins may be deficient, Dr. Elif Ünüvar: “Most importantly, we first have what we call hypoglycemia. What we call hypoglycemia is blood sugar below 50. This is generally the situation we see in our young girls due to unbalanced nutrition or as a result of wrong diets. In hypoglycemia, our sugar balance in the body is disrupted. However, there is an irregularity in blood circulation and we can often see our patients complaining that they are constantly cold in such situations.

Secondly, the underlying cause of coldness usually lies in vitamin deficiencies. These are vitamin B12 deficiency, zinc and vitamin D deficiencies, and anemia, which we call anemia. In these cases, our patients usually come with complaints of ‘I feel very cold’. In such cases, we first evaluate the patients and perform a series of tests and tests. “Whether it is present in terms of vitamins or not, depends on the nutritional balance, and when we find a disorder in these, we proceed with treatments accordingly,” he said.

THOSE WHO SAY THAT THEY ARE CONSTANTLY COLD SHOULD DEFINITELY CONSULT A DOCTOR.

Dr. Ünüvar continued: “The countless causes of cold may seem very simple, but they are vascular problems. We see vascular problems very frequently, especially in our patients who smoke. These are the disorders we call burger on the fingers and Raynaud’s phenomenon. Due to these, there is no blood circulation in our veins, especially due to smoking. Sometimes we also have genetic hereditary vascular diseases. The underlying causes of these circulatory disorders are especially the reasons for feeling cold; being cold in the foreground, then what happens in natural periods, vascular occlusions occur, and bruises occur on the fingers. As the patient’s symptoms increase, our complaints continue to increase. The underlying reasons are our levels of anemia, which we call anemia. These are already seen in women, especially in 70 to 80 percent of anemias.

These are the conditions we see due to inadequate and unbalanced nutrition and blood loss. Sometimes we also see anemia in genetic diseases called thalassemia. These are among the reasons that we can list as cold. These are situations that we do not attach much importance to, such as the weather is normal, I should dress a little warmer, but in fact, for the reasons we have mentioned, feeling cold may be a preliminary reaction of the body, especially in terms of hypothyroidism, vascular disorders, anemias, vitamin deficiencies, and some metabolic disorders. The body gives this to us with coldness, and then gives us other symptoms. “We recommend that a person, or even a healthy individual, who constantly complains of ‘I feel cold’, should contact the relevant units or these check-up centers and have these problems examined and evaluated before they progress, without neglecting it.”
