Pro-Russian candidate Aleksandr Stoianoglo in the lead in Moldova’s elections

Two weeks ago, Moldovans voted by a narrow majority for membership in the EU. Parallel to the referendum, a presidential election was held, where pro-European Maia Sandu received the most support with 42 percent.

As Sandu did not reach the 50 percent required, there was a second round of elections.

There, challenger and pro-Russian candidate Aleksandr Stoianoglo looks set to win with 80 percent of the vote counted.

The votes that remain to be counted come from areas where Sandu had strong support.

At 21.30 Swedish time, the election has not yet been decided.
