Often described as “ugly” or “ridiculous”, Crocs are nevertheless very popular with young Americans. They love these plastic clogs so much that they don’t hesitate to wear them to school, which has a way of annoying their teachers.
Goodbye sneakers and other closed shoes. To go to school, Americans now favor Crocs, these colorful shoes that can be worn barefoot or with socks and which are renowned for being particularly comfortable. They can also be personalized as desired thanks to the “jibbitz”, these decorative charms that are fixed in the holes of the Crocs, like a pin.
However, several school principals complain that Crocs are a source of accidents within their establishments, reports Bloomberg. According to them, young people are more likely to fall when they wear this type of shoe, the fault of the strap that they place at the front of the shoe for more practicality, and not behind the ankle. “Jibbitzes” are also problematic because they would distract students in class.
As a result, dozens of schools located in a dozen American states now prohibit their students from wearing Crocs. Lake City Elementary School, in south Atlanta, recently changed its internal rules to state that “all students must wear closed-toe shoes for safety reasons (no Crocs).” . In Florida, LaBelle College has made similar arrangements.
This does not discourage young Americans. Teenagers in Uncle Sam’s country love these shoes, so much so that Crocs ranks among their favorite brands, according to a report from investment bank Piper Sandler. This enthusiasm is notably due to the numerous partnerships that the shoe manufacturer has established with celebrities in recent years. In October 2020, his pair designed in collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny was sold out in less than 16 minutes. That of Canadian singer Justin Bieber enjoyed comparable success upon its release.
Far from resting on its achievements, Crocs does not hesitate to renew itself to stay at the forefront of trends. After having worn shoes for men, women and children around the world, the brand recently teamed up with the company Bark to design ankle boots for dogs, made from phosphorescent plastic.
