The fact that the climate does not occupy a very large place in the American election campaign is not really that strange. In the polls that gather closely before each election, it rarely makes it into the top lists of voters’ most important issues.
In a measurement carried out by Pew Research Center the climate even ranks at the bottom of the election issues that the polled registered voters attach the most importance to.
Having said that, the issue can still carry a lot of weight in a voter group that both candidates are now investing heavily in: young people.
American NBC News describes the climate as a possible “deal breaker” for young voters, citing a survey conducted by a democratic opinion institute. There, 40 percent of the respondents, who were all under the age of 35, answered that they can only imagine voting for a candidate who prioritizes climate measures.
SVT asked voters in West Virginia about their views on the climate – and about what impression Greta Thunberg has made on the other side of the Atlantic. Hear the answers in the clip above.
