Petter Northug was somewhat sensationally second in the 20 kilometer classic in the Norwegian Cup last year.
After that, the Norwegian national team coach Eirik Myhr Nossum announced that he saw there was a chance for Northug to make it to the World Cup in Trondheim 2025, and Northug is now making a bet to get there, and is currently in Italy at a high-altitude camp.
Premiere in two weeks
For the Norwegian newspaper VG Northug has now presented its competition plan for the season. It contains three competitions:
Must be the best for the NM
The competition in Beitostölen will be Northug’s first against the Norwegian elite in a long time, but he does not have high hopes for that competition.
– I do not prioritize that competition. Unfortunately, we have to count on the prologue in the sprint not going my way, he says.
He is betting on being at his best for the Norwegian championships. His dream is to be selected for a sprint relay team for the WC, together with Johannes Hösflot Kläbo,
I think it will be a bet on the Vasaloppet
However, he believes that the chance of a WC ticket is no greater than two percent, and thus expects to change the focus on training and competing after the Norwegian championships.
– Most likely, I will change my focus from all-round racing to long races, where the Vasaloppet will most likely be the big goal this season, he says.
