Storm Jakob persists: “Take it easy”

During Friday, storm Jakob moved in over Sweden from Norway. It has led to closed roads, power outages and canceled trains around the country.

Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration, says that the storm was “very challenging”, including in Bohuslän, Östergötland and Sörmland during the day.

– There have been incredible gusts of wind and with the wet ground that is out there, a lot of trees are uprooted. Not least it has been challenging on the smaller road network, he says in “Efter fem”.

The call: “Take it easy tonight”

Several train departures have had to be cancelled, including along the northern part of the Bohusbanan, and along the Stångådals and Tjustbanan. The canceled departures will continue for a while, according to Olsson.

– Some will open after midnight, then we will go out and check them out. But Tjust- and Stångadal will probably have to wait until tomorrow, around 9am, he says.

During Friday evening, the storm moves up along the Baltic coast, and Bengt Olsson advises people who are considering going out on the roads to keep an eye on SMHI’s weather warnings and to listen to the radio and television channels that make weather broadcasts.

– I would take it easy this evening regarding the smaller road network, there are still a lot of trees that are a bit noisy. Where exactly it remains is not difficult to say, he says.

The meteorologist: Will last

SMHI has issued several yellow wind warnings during Friday and Saturday, and according to meteorologist Madeleine Westin, the storm will continue during the night and morning in its parts.

– It will continue. Don’t be out on the roads if you don’t have to in these areas where the wind is the worst, she says.

It is above all in the mountain areas and on Gotland that the wind is expected to last until Saturday morning, SMHI announces on its website. Snowfall is also expected in the mountain areas.
