“We want this Halloween to be safe and fun for everyone,” Deputy Chief Mike Van Sickle, with Sarnia police, said in a release.

“Our officers will not only be out in greater numbers to provide security, but they will also be engaging with the community, especially children, to help foster trust and build stronger relationships,” he said.

Officers on foot, in cruisers and on bicycles will stop to talk with children and families and offer Halloween safety tips, the police service said.

“We hope the sight of officers on bicycles and in cruisers will help parents and kids feel secure, and also remind everyone that we are here as part of the community,” Van Sickle said. “Children are encouraged to wave or say hello to officers that they see patrolling.”

Lambton OPP also issued a statement saying it will increase patrols in neighborhoods it polices in Lambton County.

“Halloween is all about fun, but safety comes first,” the OPP said. “Let’s make sure the only surprises this Halloween are sweet ones.

Police say parents should send children out with reflective gear and flashlights to boost their visibility, accompany young children, remind youngsters to only approach homes where the lights are on and have an adult check their candy when they return home.

Trick-or-treaters are also encouraged to stick to well-lit areas, travel in groups, use sidewalks and crosswalks and look both ways before crossing the street, police said.

Drivers are asked to be cautious and slow down, particularly in residential areas, and to watch for youngsters crossing the street.

Anyone seeing a suspected impaired or distracted driver should call Sarnia police or the OPP.

“We look forward to seeing everyone out enjoying Halloween safely, and we want all families to know that the Sarnia Police Service is here to ensure that the night is filled with fun, not fear,” Van Sickle said.
