A 23-year-old man who went to the doctor complaining of pain and indigestion could not believe his ears when he heard that the source of his pain was a cockroach living in his small intestine. Or rather, a live cockroach.
HE WAS SUFFERING FROM DIGAMENT AND FLATTING
According to Indian Express, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology, Dr. Shubham Vatsya said, “The patient was suffering from indigestion and bloating after eating for the last two or three days. We saw the cockroach accidentally during routine check-ups.” he said.
Vatsya shared that during the endoscopy performed at a hospital in New Delhi, India, they removed a 3-centimeter-long cockroach. Talking about the operation with many risks, the doctor said, “After finding the insect, we immediately started removing it.”
“We activated the suction button on the scope, effectively drawing the cockroach into the suction channel, thus removing it from the body and saving the man’s life,” Vatsya said.
HE WAS STILL ALIVE
The patient was unaware that he had eaten the cockroach. The cockroach survived not only after being eaten, but also after being sucked into the endoscopy tube.
“EVEN WE WERE SURPRISED”
“Even we were surprised at how the cockroach could survive,” Vatsya said.
Cockroaches are a well-known disease vector, according to the National Library of Medicine. The library lists many pathogens carried by insects, such as E. Coli, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Rotavirus, and Aspergillus.
