“It’s over, we lost”

Mighty warriors with impressive great swords are an integral part of the fantasy genre and have also been a part of Dragon Age so far. However, in footage from the upcoming role-playing game The Veilguard, players noticed a suspicious absence of the iconic weapon.

What weapon is it about? The greatsword is a two-handed weapon that has been part of Dragon Age since Origins and is also standard in many comparable fantasy games. However, attentive fans noticed that the great sword wasn’t actually visible in the shots shown so far.

Now it seems to be a sad certainty: there probably won’t be a greatsword.

Greatsword devotees, unite

What do the fans say? When the first previews for Veilguard came out in September, eagle-eyed fans noticed a suspicious lack of greatsword footage. Reddit user Randolo_Birnelli asked if anyone had already discovered a Rook with a greatsword.

In the comments, other players were similarly nervous:

  • ruascherrios: “I’m worried too, man. My favorite weapon type, I’ve played all the Dragon Age games with it. You can’t not have it in there, can you?”
  • Eternal_Seekers: “I noticed this very quickly because I’m always a warrior with heavy armor in every RPG. […]“
  • In another post, TheBlightDoc said he was excited about Veilguard, but criticized the lack of the greatsword in the footage shown. “I’m not the only one who noticed this, am I?” (via Reddit)

On October 28, the same user took on the task of delivering the sad message: “It’s over, Greatsword Bros. We lost…”

    Players aren’t mad, just surprised

Where does the confirmation come from now? YouTuber NorZZa confirmed in the comments under his review on YouTube that there will be no greatswords.

In the comments, some fans of the series are disappointed, but many are primarily surprised at the decision not to include such a classic weapon in the game. We have compiled a few reactions from the community for you here:

  • SithLocust: “Aw damn, I was hoping for a two-handed Rook with a greatsword. Damned. Now I have to rethink it from scratch.”
  • AragornII_Elessar: “That…seems really strange? I’m really curious why the greatsword isn’t included, it’s part of the fantasy genre. […]“
  • Overall, the mood can be summed up aptly with: “I’m not angry, just surprised.” Many long-time fans of the series cannot understand the decision, as other two-handed weapons are involved, such as hammers and axes.

Although many emphasize that they are still looking forward to the game, the fact that a fantasy classic like the great sword is missing is still the latest in a series of incomprehensible design decisions for players.

We can also say from our own gaming experience in the MeinMMO editorial team that there are no greatswords. But just to be on the safe side, we asked again in case we missed any box. We will add the answer here as soon as we receive it.

But the discussion about the missing weapon is unlikely to stop. MeinMMO editor Grothaus believes: There’s more to come. You can find out what’s behind it here: The press and Metacritic are praising Dragon Age: The Veilguard and that will cause a huge argument with the players
