At Bares for Rares, valuable works of art are regularly offered for sale. But just because something is supposed to be art, it doesn’t automatically have to be beautiful. Horst Lichter and the retailers illustrated this lesson with a drastic example: one in particular Unconventional bronze statue ensures long faces in the dealer room – but then there is a bidding war.
Horst Lichter is not happy: he doesn’t like this bronze statue at all
Happy as always, Horst Lichter enters the scene in the episode from June 22nd, 2022. “Well, what’s nice?” he wants to know. Then his eyes fall on the grotesque statue on the expert table. His eyes widen as if he had seen a ghost. “That’s not nice”he states dryly. He can’t resist a dig: for the first time he can understand why the saleswoman wants to get rid of the treasure.
Expert Dr. Bianca Berding explains that this is the case “idiosyncratic” Piece is about a statue called “The Fool”. It shows a grotesquely distorted man who surprises with a piquant detail: the character is stark naked. The saleswoman no longer wanted to polish the naked man’s bald head, so the statue should now go.
“Can this go away?”: There’s gossip in the dealer’s room, then it rains bids
The unusual figure provokes mixed reactions in the dealers’ room. Art expert Daniel Meyer first appears diplomatic: “It’s a very brave representation. Very grotesque.”
“Is that nice?”asks dealer Elke Velten to the group. Meyer then answers cheekily: “Or can this go away?” He makes it clear that he doesn’t really like the statue when the couple enters the dealer’s room. He asks flippantly: “What kind of ugly thing is that?”
The dealer counters tough: “You just have to look at it longer. Then you make peace with it.” In the end, even the skeptical dealers recognize the value of the statue. The final bid is impressive: antique dealers Friedrich Häusser paid an impressive 4,400 euros.
