Eight out of eleven judges of Mexico’s Supreme Court have resigned in protest against the controversial law which means that the people will get to choose all of the country’s judges.

The law change was pushed through by the recently departed President Manuel López Obrador and will be applied starting in 2025.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch has warned that the change “will seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary”.
