Finland will face Slovenia and Bulgaria at home next week.
The Finnish women’s national basketball team has announced its team for the EC qualifying matches to be played in Helsinki in November.
Finland named 14 players for the second window of the EC qualifiers. Compared to the previous EC qualifiers a year ago, the team includes four new names: Sara Bejedi, Saana Kujala, Lotta Vehka-aho and Lilli Onnela.
The EC qualifying matches are played in three windows. Finland won away to Bulgaria a year ago, but lost at home to Hungary, the 2023 European Championship semi-final team.
Finland will play next week against Slovenia on Thursday and Bulgaria on Sunday. Finland’s chief pilot Ilkka Palviainen considers the opposition very strong and reminds that both have strengthened since last year.
Palviainen sees the summer of five defeats in international matches as two-sided, but instructive.
– As a result, we did not win. Winning creates a lot of good. But correspondingly, I believe that the way we played and the challenges the players faced in training and in match situations will carry further, Palviainen commented in the press release.
