This is how you can drive on petrol in Stockholms

At New Year, it is introduced for the first time a environmental zone of class 3 in Sweden, specifically in central Stockholm.

After December 31, it will not be permitted to drive into the area within Kungsgatan, Birger Jarlsgatan, Hamngatan and Sveavägen, if you drive a car that is not an electric car, a gas car with emission class Euro 6, or a fuel cell car.

This means that cars powered by petrol, E85 or diesel will not be welcome.

Several vehicles are exempt from the rules

However, there are a number of exceptions as it is permitted to drive within environmental zone 3 with vehicles that would normally not have been welcome.

These mainly revolve around vehicles that are used for a specific purpose, or by specific people. For example, vehicles used in the professional practice of a police officer, a doctor, a veterinarian, or other emergency services are also welcome in the environmental zone in the future.

However, there is a category of vehicles that private individuals can use without reservation within the new environmental zone, even if they are powered by gasoline.

The loophole for driving on petrol in the environmental zone

The vehicle category in question is motorcycles and mopeds, which will also be allowed to drive within the environmental zone in the future.

This means that whoever gets around the city on a gas-powered two-wheeler can still drive all the way to their destination throughout the city.

Should one manage to seize one of the few diesel-powered motorcycles that have been manufactured over the years, this too will be allowed to be used in the environmental zone.

The City of Stockholm is careful to point out that the exemptions for environmental zone class 3 are governed by the traffic regulation, and that it is not possible to adjust them.

Unlike environmental zone class 2, which already exists elsewhere in Stockholm, vintage cars, with an age of 30 years or more, are not covered by the exceptions.
