Polestar has filed a protest with the US Department of Commerce, reports Reuters.
This is because of a new bill put forward by the US government, which the company says effectively makes its car models “banned” from selling in the US.
The new teams that threaten Polestar
The basic idea of the proposal put forward by the US government is that connected cars equipped with software developed in China or Russia should be banned.
Later, the hardware, i.e. the cars themselves, which are developed in China will also be banned.
The reason is that, according to the US government, the cars pose an “urgent threat” to the national security of the US.
A car is considered to be connected if, for example, it is equipped with an internet connection via satellite or mobile network, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
A Swedish-Chinese car brand
Polestar began its career as a car manufacturer as a sister brand to Volvo, and is still headquartered in Gothenburg. Its stock is listed in the US.
However, the company’s main owner is, just like Volvo, the Chinese Geely group, and part of the development and production is located in China.
In its protest, Polestar points out that the proposed law would not only stop the sale of the cars built in China in the US market, but also the cars built in South Carolina.

Polestar takes action
While criticizing the new bill, Polestar has already started taking steps to guard against its consequences. This is revealed in a comment We Car Owners.
“Polestar is already working to ensure that future model years include components and software to be compatible with the proposed regulations, to ensure that customers in the United States will be able to continue to purchase Polestar cars, including the Polestar 3, which is now manufactured in South Carolina” , one writes to the newspaper.
It is also clarified that the communication with the American authorities is primarily about the fact that they think too much focus is placed on the ownership structure of a company in the current bill.
Rather, it is believed that consideration should be given to where the company conducts its manufacturing and software development.
