Exciting and accessible, this political series, which had its small success a year ago, returns for a season 2 on the streaming platform.
House of Cards, Black Baron, At the White House, Veep… Politics is presented very well on the screens and the behind-the-scenes intrigues, between dirty tricks and scandals, often fascinate viewers. In 2023, one of them has fascinated Netflix subscribers thanks to its omnipresent tension and its impeccable acting. “Absolutely brilliant” or “one of the best series watched in 2023” can we read as a review from Internet users on social networks, it is finally coming back for a sequel.
Created by Debora Cahn (At the White House, Grey’s Anatomy), this political thriller follows Kate Wyler, appointed United States ambassador to the United Kingdom in the midst of a crisis: a British navy aircraft carrier suffered a missile attack in the Persian Gulf. With Iran under suspicion and a war threatening to begin, she must defuse this international crisis and find the culprit, but also forge strategic alliances. At the same time, she must resolve the problems in her marriage, and in particular the interference from her husband, himself a former ambassador. The series is very simply titled The diplomat.
Eight episodes of around fifty minutes were released on April 20, 2023. And The diplomat quickly found its audience, thanks to a well-crafted, but never abstruse, political intrigue, all served by performances from high-level actors: Keri Russell, who had already impressed in the role of a Russian spy infiltrated in The Americans plays the diplomat of the title. She plays opposite Rufus Sewell (Knight, The Holiday), David Gyasi (Carnival Row), Ato Essandoh (The Code), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along) or even Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful, The Ministry of the Dirty War).
When its first season was released, critics were pleasantly surprised by this new program, and did not fail to praise its merits: The diplomat received a press rating of 84/100 on Rotten Tomatoes, 3.5/5 on Allociné, and the spectator rating is even higher: 3.9/5. Enough to be impatient to discover season 2 which will feature Allison Janney (Me, Tonya, At the White House) in the role of Vice President of the United States. New episodes come out October 31.
