Matilde Lorenzi died after a crash in training – the alpine talent turned 19

The Italian alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi is dead.
The 19-year-old crashed during a training session and hit his head. Her life could not be saved.

It was during Monday morning that the 19-year-old alpine skier Matilda Lorenzi one of Italy’s greatest talents, lost control of his skis and crashed seriously during a run in Val Senales.

Serious crash

According to Italian media, the skis must have broken during the ride and she crashed into a pile of frozen snow head first. She came in at high speed and didn’t have a chance to accommodate herself in any way.

Matilde Lorenzi was immediately taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter, but her life could not be saved. A day later, the Italian Ski Federation Fisi confirmed that Lorenzi had passed away.

“Fisi is in mourning, and gives thoughts to family and friends and all those who loved Matilde and will remember her forever,” the association writes on its website.

Mourned worldwide

It is not only in Italy that the death drew attention. The international skiing and snowboarding federation Fis also sends its condolences to Lorenzi’s family and friends.

“We are deeply affected by the death of Matilde Lorenzi,” they write in a statement.

During his short career, the 19-year-old managed to win the domestic overall competition in super-G among juniors. Best placing in a senior competition was an eleventh place in the European Cup in super-G in December 2023.
