the UN Security Council denounces an intensification of military actions

The UN Security Council met urgently on October 28 to discuss Sudan and the escalation of violence in the country. For a year and a half, the country has been ravaged by a war which pits two generals, former allies who are now enemies, against each other, the head of the Sudanese army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitaries of the Forces of rapid support (FSR) of his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo.

After eighteen months of war, the Sudanese are living a “nightmare” with thousands of dead and displaced people, and 25 million people in need of help. To respond to this crisis, the Security Council therefore met urgently on Monday, this time in the presence of a representative of the Sudan – who was not named in the official program – invited by the Swiss presidency.

This representative of Sudan recalled the importance of the actions carried out by the Sudanese army to protect these civilians in the face of the conflict: “ We protect civilians taking refuge in areas where the Sudanese armed forces are present. And foreign witnesses can confirm it. More than that, we are fighting with them to defend themselves against the RSF paramilitaries in Darfur. This support also involves protecting the humanitarian aid that the militias are trying to pillage. We work to facilitate the delivery of aid and provide protection to those who need it. »

The fear that the conflict will spread

The UN Secretary-General urges both sides to end the conflict and return to the negotiating table. But the fighting is becoming more and more violent. “ Instead of calming tensions, military actions intensifyestimates Antonio Guterres. We face the serious possibility that the conflict will spread and trigger regional instability from the Sahel, to the Horn of America and to the Red Sea. We must act on the ground. »

Antonio Guterres calls for sending a force called “ impartial » on the ground to protect civilians. For him, the most urgent thing is to facilitate and accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The conflict has already displaced 11 million people and more than 750,000 people are food insecure.
