A new fantasy film on Netflix is like Jumanji and is currently number 1 in the charts

Countless series and films from various countries appear on Netflix every week. The Netflix charts are a good way to see what is currently being watched often. But quality doesn’t always prevail there. A new fantasy film starring Jean Reno seems to show just that.

What film is it about? On October 23, 2024, the film The Werewolves of Mirkwood was released on Netflix. The fantasy film is very reminiscent of Jumanji, as a French family plays a mysterious version of the werewolf game.

The film was directed by François Uzan. He is best known as the screenwriter of the Netflix series Lupine with Omar Sy. The well-known actor Jean Reno also plays. The film also seems to be finding a larger audience, as it is currently number 1 in the film charts in Germany.

A party game becomes Jumanji

What is The Werewolves of Mirkwood about? A French family wants to play the well-known game Werewolf. The game is reminiscent of Among Us. A village has to find out who the werewolf is that steals its victims at night. The focus of the game is on the discussions and the work of finding the werewolf.

In the film itself, the werewolf version of the family does not seem to be a normal one, because like in Jumanji, the family is suddenly transported to a medieval world. But the unknown werewolf is a real threat there, and the family has to survive this circumstance.

The Werewolves of Mirkwood is a fantasy comedy, you don’t need to expect any real horror from it.

What are the initial reactions to the film? Although the film is currently number 1 in the Netflix charts in Germany, there are hardly any reviews and the voices of normal users don’t seem to be happy either. There are too few reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for both a critic and a user score. There seems to be a particular problem with the cinematic implementation of the game:

  • Jason W writes: After playing the original party game […] Having played it many times, I was looking forward to this film adaptation. It’s a clever idea, but unfortunately it was poorly implemented.
  • Charlermat P also criticizes the implementation: Didn’t make good use of the game’s elements. The characters are annoying
  • However, the few positive voices praise the film as a family film:

  • Ian H sees the problem more in the expectations of some viewers: I’m not sure what people expected from this film, but it’s a good, comforting family film.
  • Marie B also praises the film as a family film: an absolutely great film. D&D meets Jumanji with Shreck-like humor. Good comedy and lots of laughs. […] Personally a great family film.
  • The film’s ratings on IMDb don’t look any better. With just over 2,400 reviews, the film only has a score of 5.4 out of 10 stars.

But if you don’t expect much and want to watch a shallow film on the side, you can probably do that with The Werewolves of Mirkwood. You probably shouldn’t expect much from the current number 1 spot on Netflix. If you don’t have anything against documentaries, you should watch a heartbreaking story from the WoW community: WoW: An emotional documentary on Netflix touches the community – players make a pilgrimage to the memorial of the deceased
