Great MMORPG hope Ashes of Creation is allowing more players than ever onto the servers

Ashes of Creation Alpha 2 has officially started and more players than ever before are flocking to the MMORPG’s servers. And best of all: the testers are allowed to report freely about their experiences.

What do I need to know about Alpha 2? While Ashes of Creation was still quite a patchwork in the first alpha test phase, since October 25, 2024 it has been possible for the first time to use the MMORPG with all of its basic functions as well as systems such as quests, nodes, world bosses, open-world PvP, crafting , mounts and caravans to test.

However, this only applies if you have purchased certain Kickstarter or pre-order packages for Ashes of Creation or received the corresponding access through another method. Additional waves of players are planned for the following dates:

  • November 8, 2024: All buyers of a first wave bundle are allowed into Alpha 2
  • December 20, 2024: All buyers of a second wave bundle are allowed into Alpha 2
  • May 1, 2025: All buyers of a third wave bundle are allowed into Alpha 2
  • In the coming weeks and months, server stability and scalability will be the focus of developers. For now, Alpha 2 only runs on weekends.

    Alpha testers are torn

How did the launch of Alpha 2 go? Pretty mixed, actually. First, the developers had to slightly postpone the start time of Alpha 2 due to some unexpected bugs (via X). Then, after the launch, targeted DDOS attacks on Ashes of Creation’s game and web services followed. The servers therefore had to be taken offline for some time (via Reddit).

Despite these initial difficulties, various testers said they were able to spend 20 or more hours in Verra over the weekend and take a good look at the current version of the great MMORPG hope.

How does the community rate Alpha 2? The threads from SnooTigers4611 and Hopeful_Impression_1, both of whom describe themselves as casual players, show how different the testers’ first impressions are.

Hopeful_Impression_1 explains in his extensive post on Reddit that he is already having a lot of fun with Ashes of Creation despite various alpha quirks (crashes, graphical errors, bugs) and long queues. It is grindy in the “best possible way” and a lot of the content focuses wonderfully on social interaction.

After Tibia, Knight Online and Perfect World, AoC has everything the next MMORPG needs to have to inspire him for more than ten years – according to his current assessment.

At the start of Alpha 2 there was a Let’s Play from the developers:

In SnooTigers4611’s also very extensive Reddit thread there is little praise: the music is fantastic, the terrain in the world is well designed, the fights are fun enough and the visual animations and effects are quite nice.

The list of criticism or points that, in his opinion, urgently need to be improved, is significantly longer:

  • Wayfinding of the mobs and readability in the fights could be improved. The evasion doesn’t work correctly. Enemy melee attacks can hit even from ten meters away.
  • Despite its pretty design, the card is “miserable” and not fun to use.
  • The chat system is “completely useless” in its current state.
  • There should be no player guidance through quests, his group is apparently stuck at level 7/8 because there should be no clue as to where they should go next.
  • There is currently so little story and lore in Ashes of Creation that the world feels disappointingly generic.
  • In quest mobs you compete with other players, which makes it difficult to make the necessary progress on kill missions.
  • Open-world PvP is currently very frustrating: a player is said to have activated PvP and killed his mount. This forced him to run through the game world on foot for ten minutes. When he tried to fight back, he was punished by the corruption debuff. Apparently he could only get rid of the effect by killing his character, although the tooltip says otherwise.
  • Is there any more feedback? Players are currently discussing their experiences from Alpha 2 in various threads:

  • Elegang-Ad-6797 writes on Reddit: “There’s still a long way to go before the game meets the standards the team has set, but I have faith they will get there. […] The fun I had playing the game made me forget I even had to wait in line.”
  • VOX-OPS explains on Reddit: “I’ve spent almost 20 hours of the last 48 hours playing this game. I haven’t played a game this much in 6 years, it’s crazy that in its current state I enjoy this game more than full games.”
  • deanusMachinus adds about mob tagging (via Reddit): “Hopefully the tagging of mobs will be updated. The nameplate doesn’t gray out so you don’t know who scored first, which is frustrating.”
  • What else do I need to know about Ashes of Creation? Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG in a fantasy setting that takes place in a huge open world. You fight against world bosses and compete against each other in PvP. There should also be a system in which you level up areas, thereby improving cities and changing areas of the game world – the so-called “nodes”. The development of the MMORPG began in 2015.
