Armand Duplantis receives a historic award as Europe’s best

Armand Duplantis has been awarded as Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Europe – it would be strange otherwise after the super season he had.
What’s actually a little strange is that it’s the first time he’s won the award.

– It means a lot. It makes you think about everything that has happened and makes it sink in, he says according to Friidrott.se.

The 2024 season will go down in history as one of Armand Duplantis24, very best year ever. It included an IVM gold in Glasgow, an EC gold in Rome, an Olympic gold in Paris and an overall victory in the Diamond League. In addition, the Swedish-American broke his own world record three times – including once during the Olympic final itself. It’s incredibly good! He also went and got engaged to his love Desire Inglander23.

Glad to get the award

When you have such a thunderous season as “Mondo” had in 2024, it is not so surprising that you are nominated, as one of ten people, for the title of Athlete of the Year in Europe. He subsequently became one of three finalists on the men’s side and was eventually voted number one by the public, all member states, the media and a panel of experts.

Shockingly, this was actually the first time Duplantis won the award as Europe’s best athlete, at least by himself. For 2022, he had to share the title with Norwegians Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

– I’m in the US training and seeing my family, but this award means a lot. It makes you think about everything that has happened and makes it sink in, it’s super cool, he says at a link according to Friidrott.se.

The Olympic gold in focus

The pole vaulter was asked to rank the highlight of the season, and although he had a lot to choose from, the answer was ultimately obvious. Nothing can beat an Olympic gold, an Olympic record and a world record in the same night, right?

– It’s hard to say anything other than Paris, but I’m very lucky to have several things to choose from. Rome was also amazing. It is always fantastic to represent Sweden and Europe. We are athletes and love to compete, I can hardly wait to get going again, he says.

The Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the award on the women’s side. This year’s star shot was the Dutch middle distance runner Niels Laros and the Serbian javelin thrower Adriana Vilagos.

Many congratulations to you, Armand. You are well worth this award. We all sign that.

Now we pay tribute to our Swedish star as much as we can! Feel free to write a comment on Sportbibeln’s Facebook page and tell us why you love “Mondo”!
