Food poisoning caused by coliform bacteria in the United States does not originate from McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburger meat, the company announces.

The United States Food Safety Agency (FDA) suspects that coliform bacteria have been present in the uncooked onions used in the hamburgers, which the chain received from a single producer in Colorado. McDonald’s restaurants, which have purchased onions from a total of 900 Colorado producers, are returning their Quarter Pounder burgers to sale without onions.

By Friday, a total of 75 cases of food poisoning had been reported in 13 different states. One person has died and 22 have had to be hospitalized. Two people are reported to have suffered severe kidney dysfunction as a result of food poisoning.
