Voters’ criticism of the US electoral system: “Needs more options”

The American election enters the final battle. For many Swedes, the American electoral system can be difficult to understand.

When SVT meets voters outside the hockey arena in the city of Fort Wayne, it becomes clear that even many American voters have a rather vague picture of what happens to their votes after they cast them in the autumn elections. Most people know that the electoral college takes over after the votes are counted – but what happens there, no one can answer.

– There is no transparency, no openness about who actually makes the decisions, and then it becomes a lot of conspiracy theories, says voter TJ whom SVT meets outside the arena.

Criticism of the two-party system

Another thing that the vast majority of SVT meets can agree on is that the current two-party system with Democrats and Republicans is not working. Several express that they find it difficult to choose because they do not agree with any of the parties one hundred percent.

– Everyone who places themselves slightly outside or between the parties argues that it should change, but it never will. We’ve had two big parties for over a hundred years now, says TJ.
