The classic meatballs are served with potatoes, cream sauce, lingonberry jam and green peas, and have been on the menu since 1985. Since then, several options have been added for people with other preferences.

“The recipe has been fine-tuned over time, but above all, other buns have been added to complement the meatball, such as chicken meatballs, plantain buns and vegetable buns,” writes Fredrik Norrlidpress manager at Ikea, in an email to Nyheter24.

By taking a closer look at how many meatballs Ikea sells, it becomes clear that the dish is a popular choice on the menu. At Ikea’s homepage it appears that they sell a staggering 25 million meatballs per year in Sweden.

“Globally, more than one billion meatballs are sold per year,” writes Fredrik Norrlid.
