Japans ruling coalition may lose parliamentary majority News in

Japan’s ruling coalition may lose its parliamentary majority in today’s election, according to exit polls.

According to a poll by public broadcaster NHK, the Liberal Democratic Party and its government partner would get 174-254 of the 465 seats in parliament.

The main opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, would get between 128 and 191 seats.

If the result is according to the polls, the Liberal Democrats may have to agree on power sharing with the opposition.

The Liberal Democrats have ruled Japan for most of the post-war period and for 12 straight years.

Prime minister Shigeru Ishiba ordered a new election when he was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats last month.
