Foreign Minister Valtonen on the situation in the Middle East: Bringing the parties to the negotiating table | Foreign countries

This is how Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen commented on the

Elina Valtonen (coordinator) sees that Israel had the right to last night’s attacks on Iran within the framework of international law, because they were aimed at military targets.

Early on Saturday, Israel carried out airstrikes on several military targets in Iran. It was a response to Iran’s missile attack on Israel in early October.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen (co.) sees that Israel had the right to the attacks within the framework of international law, as they apparently targeted purely military targets.

According to Valtonen, Finland has been appealing for months to calm the region and stop the military escalation. The situation in Gaza and Lebanon are linked to the situation, and the parties should be brought back to the negotiating table.

– Personally, I don’t think that, for example, killing individual leaders of a terrorist organization will bring an end to this situation. Rather, we now appeal to all parties to return to the path of diplomacy.

According to Valtonen, in the situation in the Middle East, it is worth looking at different actions as individual actions within the whole.

– It can be challenging at times. Finland obviously always acts in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. We have also voted for it this fall at the UN.

According to Valtonen, Finland’s position is to support the international court system, which has independent investigators on the ground to evaluate the attacks, their impact on civilians and possible war crimes.

– When the investigation is completed and especially at the point when the international court or the international criminal court leaves its verdict, Finland will of course support it.
