Police arrest hacker driving a sports car with a self-issued driver’s license

The fake driver’s license is only one and hardly the worst of his crimes, but it has now brought him into the police’s sights while behind the wheel of a BMW.

The title look is a symbolic image.

How can a hacker get a driver’s license? According to a report by Spanish daily EL Mundo, Spanish hacker José Luis Huertas Rubio, aka Alcasec, has been arrested. But not because of cybercrime, for which the now 21-year-old has been in conflict with the judiciary since he was 15. At the end of September 2024, he drove around the center of Madrid in a borrowed BMW M4 and attracted the attention of the police with his dangerous driving style. After an unsuccessful attempt to escape, he was caught.

The explosive thing aside from his behavior on the road is that Alcasec shouldn’t be behind the wheel at all. He has never successfully passed a driving test, but still has a real and valid driver’s license in his pocket.

A stolen driver’s license

How did Alcasec get a driver’s license? A few years ago, Alcasec hacked into the computers of the state transport authority. Here he made sure that a valid driving license with all the trimmings was printed and sent out for him. In order to obtain the necessary rights in the state system, he posed as an agent of the Spanish secret service.

Why isn’t his driver’s license just taken away? Although it is undisputed that the driver’s license was obtained through criminal means, the 21-year-old still uses it today. Because in the strictest sense it is not fake, because the state issued it. Several authorities are currently trying to initiate appropriate procedures and initiate internal withdrawal processes.

But the effort is enormous due to the special situation and Alcasec can slow down the process with the help of lawyers. Because he has the right to participate and to be heard repeatedly. Furthermore, according to Spanish law, his traffic offenses are not sufficient to permanently revoke his passport in this way.

What else is Alcasec accused of? For several years now, the man has been regularly breaking into other people’s systems and stealing data. Among other things, he created a kind of “Google for stolen data” on a web server, as El Mundo reports. The hacker sells access to the system he calls “Udyat” to other criminals. According to the allegations, he also allegedly used the illegal hack for the pseudo-legal driver’s license for friends of his and, in return for payment, for other people known to the authorities.
