After 10 years, the story of Dragon Age in The Veilguard finally continues and is already exciting fans, but also some new potential players. MeinMMO explains briefly and concisely what you need to know about the story of Dragon Age in order to know what happens in the latest part. Here you can find the summary of the plot of the first part Origins.
Spoiler warning: Here it goes – of course – and the story of Dragon Age: Origins and we reveal the entire story including the ending and decisions. If, like many others, you just want to play through all the Dragon Age parts before The Veilguard and don’t want to be spoiled, you shouldn’t read any further.
Dragon Age: Origins was released in 2009 and takes place in the world 21 years before the events in The Veilguard (Age of Dragons 9:30). Here you lay the foundation for everything that will happen in the south of Thedas in the future.
For The Veilguard, the events are only partially important, because none of your decisions have any influence on what happens in the latest installment. However, it is useful to know the history of Dragon Age to better understand some situations in The Veilguard.
Important: The first three parts take place in the southern part of the world, while The Veilguard takes place in the north. So a lot of what used to happen is pretty far away for people in the north. In our special we explain how much Dragon Age you really need to know to understand The Veilguard.
That’s what Dragon Age: Origins is all about
In Origins you play a Gray Warden from Ferelden, someone whose life’s mission is to fight corruption. In the first few minutes, however, the entire order from Ferelden is wiped out due to the betrayal of a commander.
Only you and another guardian survive by rescuing Flemeth, Morrigan’s mother. Morrigan is an important character who appears again later and pursues his own goals, but you don’t see much of them in Origins. You can find out more about them in Inquisition. The colleagues from GameStar explain in detail who Morrigan is and what role she plays.
As the last surviving Gray Wardens in the area, you collect old contracts to mobilize various factions to fight against an emerging “Fifth Corruption”. Think of it like a zombie apocalypse that you have to stop.
As the story progresses, you influence the political structure in Ferelden and various peoples, determining who lives and who dies, and in the finale you face the archdemon who is leading the corruption. The highlight: whoever kills the archdemon actually dies too. In the end you are victorious, the archdemon is dead and the corruption is defeated.
The most important decisions in Origins that affect the later story
Who are the Gray Wardens?
The main faction in Origins is the Gray Wardens, a faction that also appears again in The Veilguard. The Gray Wardens undergo a deadly ritual upon admission:
You drink corrupted blood from a chalice of corruption to infect yourself with it at will. This is the only way a Guardian can sense the corruption and combat it efficiently. You are the only new initiate to survive this ritual in Origins. The ultimate goal of a Gray Warden is to slay an archdemon and lose his life in the process.
The Gray Wardens are a neutral faction that has political influence by demanding support through contracts, but otherwise does not interfere with the other realms. Their headquarters is the Weisshaupt Fortress, the leader is called the First Guardian.
Since admission often ends in death, convicted criminals often have the choice between the gallows and guards. Many of these criminals and a number of lower-class citizens join the Gray Wardens because they are generally respected
Joining the Guardians is open to every class and every race. For people, the group is a kind of escape or advancement. You can also choose to be a Gray Warden in The Veilguard: The new Dragon Age is coming soon – we want to know which of the 6 factions you will join
