Secretary General of the UN António Guterres and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin have met Russia in connection with the meeting of the BRICS countries in Kazan.

According to the account of the meeting, Guterres said that the attack on Ukraine violates the UN Charter and international law.

Earlier on Thursday, in his speech at the meeting, Guterres said, with Putin present, that a “fair peace” is needed in Ukraine.

– We need peace in Ukraine that is consistent with the UN Charter, international law and the UN General Assembly resolution.

Russia’s war of aggression has been considered a flagrant violation of the UN Charter. The Secretary General’s visit to Russia has been criticized, especially in Ukraine.

It was the first meeting between Guterres and Putin since April 2022.
