Two buses, private cars and trash cans were burned during this third night of tension in Portugalwithout causing any casualties or injuries. Particularly in the town of Loures, north of Lisbon but also in Seixal, to the south, on the other side of the Tagus. And this, despite the deployment of security forces, reports our correspondent in Lisbon, Marie-Line Darcy.
The neighborhoods where these acts of vandalism took place are far from the Zambujal district, in the northern suburbs of Lisbon, where a 43-year-old Cape Verdean was shot and killed by a police officer.
A neighborhood known to be quiet, a mixed population
Zambujal is a reputedly quiet neighborhood where a mixed population lives, but the death of Odair Moniz in circumstances that are still poorly explained provoked this anger in the suburbs. The police, who initially claimed to have been attacked with knives, seem to be backtracking on their statements. Like the two previous nights, small masked groups intervened.
In total, four buses were destroyed, hundreds of trash cans and dozens of cars. Four people were injured. A peaceful demonstration called by immigrant associations has been called for Friday, against the government’s assimilation policies.
