Final storage of nuclear fuel is approved by court

Now it is clear.
The Land and Environmental Court grants permission to a final repository for spent nuclear fuel.
“SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel Management) may deposit approximately 6,000 canisters with approximately 12,000 tons of nuclear waste in the final repository,” writes the court.

It is Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB that receives the permit for final disposal according to the environmental code. It includes a facility for encapsulation in Simpevarp, Oskarshamn municipality, and a final repository in Forsmark, Östhammar municipality.

SKB may deposit approximately 6,000 canisters with approximately 12,000 tons of nuclear waste in the final repository.

“The final disposal takes place with the KBS-3 method, which is based on three safety barriers: the canister with a 50 mm thick copper casing that encloses the nuclear waste, the buffer that surrounds the canister and the rock in Forsmark. The capsules are placed at a depth of approximately 500 meters in the rock. During the trial, an investigation was required into the risk of radioactive substances spreading in the environment for 100,000 years,” a press release states.
