Almost half of school students exposed to crime

45.3 of the students who participated in the survey stated that they had been subjected to theft, assault, threats, robbery or sexual offenses in the past year. The proportion is at roughly the same level as the latest measurement from 2021. In the past, exposure has been at a higher level, according to Brå. Exposure to sexual crimes is in 2023 at the lowest level since 2015 (12.5 percent), when the comparison period starts. Boys and girls report exposure to crime to approximately the same extent. The most common is theft. For boys, exposure to abuse then follows, and for girls, sexual crimes. The students who have been exposed to crime often answer that it happens in the school environment. Brå’s survey on crime at school is conducted every two years among students in grade nine. In this year’s survey, roughly 4,200 students answered questions about participation in and exposure to crime in the past twelve months. The purpose of the survey is to describe the development of self-reported exposure to crime and participation in crime over time. The survey has been conducted a total of 13 times since 1995.
