In the first matches of the Champions League on Wednesday, Leverkusen played a draw away to Brest and Celtic drew goalless with Atalanta.
Lukas Hradecky was in a change when Leverkusen, represented by the Finnish goalkeeper, played a 1-1 away result against Brest. French Brest and German Leverkusen are on seven points in the men’s Champions League with three matches behind them.
Leverkusen took the lead in the 24th minute By Florian Wirtz with a shot. The home team Brest came level at the end of the opening half Pierre Lees-Meloun with a handsome shot straight from the air.
Head coach of Leverkusen Xabi Alonso had messed with his normal starting line-up. Instead of Hradecky, a Czech defender played in goal Matej Kovar. Field players, for example Granit Xhaka, Edmond Tapsoba and Jeremy Frimpong started as a substitute, but came on the field in the second half.
Leverkusen’s opener featured only three players who also started last weekend in the Bundesliga in a 2-1 win over Frankfurt.
However, Leverkusen are in a good position for the Champions League playoffs, having beaten Feyenoord and AC Milan in their previous two matches. Hradecky kept a clean sheet in those matches.
Also Celtic’s Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo was on the bench when the Scottish team played a goalless away game against Italian side Atalanta. Celtic’s goal played as expected Kasper Schmeichel.
Celtic have a total of four points from their three matches in the league stage. Celtic’s previous Champions League matches were a goal-scoring affair, as first Celtic beat Slovan Bratislava 5-1 and then they lost to Borussia Dortmund no less than 1-7.
Atalanta has collected five points.
Finnish player Kairinen too is in the opening when Sparta Prague, which he represents, meets Manchester City away. Other matches starting at 10 p.m. include Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
