Dortmund embarrassingly lost their two-goal lead in the Champions League and succumbed to a 2-5 loss to Real Madrid in the second half.
Dortmund had not forgotten last season’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. The matter became clear late on Tuesday, when Dortmund, seventh in the German Bundesliga, rumbled to a promising 2–0 halftime lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, in the second half, the reigning champions Real Madrid showed their greatness, rising to 2-2 in three minutes at the hour mark and finally to a clear 5-2 victory. Antonio Rudiger opened the home team’s goal taps, Vinicius Junior collected a hat trick and it was the winning goal Lucas Vázquez handwriting.
Keeper Thibaut Courtois had to dig the ball behind his back twice in the opening half when Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens flashed their shooting skills in the 30th and 34th minutes.
Real had their place in the opening period, but luck wasn’t there either. Rodrigo and Jude Bellingham shot the crossbar in consecutive situations, just within a few seconds in the 36th minute of the match.
Carlo Ancelotti coached by Real did not lose a single match in the Champions League last season. This season, Real have won two of their three opening games in the UCL league stage at home and lost away to the French side Lille.
Aston Villa, who is fourth in the Premier League, roared to the top of the 36-team UCL league after beating Serie A club Bologna by John McGinn and with Jhon Durán’s goals 2–0. Villa has won all three of their opening games with a goal difference of 6–0.
In the early evening, Milan got their opening win in the league stage by beating Club Brugge 3–1, and Monaco crushed Crvena Zvezda 5–1.
